How we fight for dogs like Sophie

Sophie's story is one of heartbreak. But it's also a story of impact, intervention and of what happens when compassionate people refuse to look away. Her legacy doesn't end with her death; it fuels so much of the work we do at Spaniel Rescue Foundation.

We fight for dogs like Sophie every day. Sometimes we win with happy endings – joyful adoptions, health restored, trauma healed. Sometimes we win differently, by ensuring a dog's final days are filled with comfort instead of pain. Both are crucial and both require your support. Here's how we do this work and why Sophie's Legacy makes it more urgent than ever.

Emergency rescue

We operate an emergency response system for spaniels in crisis. Whether it’s a dog found abandoned or someone surrendering their beloved pet because they can no longer cope, we mobilise immediately. But every emergency call costs money – vet assessments, medical treatment, transport.

Our volunteer network spans the country. We work closely with veterinary practices, local councils, animal wardens and community members who become our eyes and ears. When Sophie was found on a roadside, the connection between Park View Vets and our volunteer meant she didn't die alone in a clinical room but got three days of love.

Veterinary partnerships

We're incredibly fortunate to work with veterinary practices who share our values. They examine our rescue dogs thoroughly, treat medical conditions others might deem too expensive and help us make the difficult decisions when a dog's quality of life cannot be restored. For dogs like Sophie, our vets provide care with extraordinary compassion. They understand that rescue isn't always about cure. But for the dogs who can be saved, we spare no expense. Sophie's tumours were too advanced. Many dogs arrive with conditions that look devastating but are treatable. Your donations can make the difference between euthanasia and recovery.

Foster care

Our foster network is the backbone of everything we do. Every dog that comes into our charity goes to a loving foster home and is never sent to kennels. These are the people who open their homes, hearts and families to dogs who are desperately in need of a second chance. It gives our rescues the chance to decompress while giving us an opportunity to assess and address any medical or behavioural needs, and to get to know them so we can match them with the perfect forever family.

As well as giving our foster carers training and ongoing support, we provide veterinary care, behavioural guidance, supplies and emotional support throughout the fostering journey. Sophie spent her final three days in foster care with our founder Lisa and her family. She was free to roam the garden, wrapped in soft blankets and given endless cuddles. She learned, right at the end, what a safe home felt like. And that’s what our foster carers do for every dog we rescue, no matter the circumstance.

Adoption

Thankfully, most of our rescue dogs go on to find permanent homes. We take the adoption process seriously, ensuring we find the right match for each individual dog’s needs.

Our adoption process includes:

  • Detailed conversations about the dog's history, needs and personality

  • Home checks to ensure safe, appropriate environments

  • Meet-and-greets with all family members and existing pets

  • Post-adoption support for the life of the dog

We've seen the transformations. These are the stories that keep us going. For every Sophie who we couldn't save, there are dozens of spaniels who get a “happy tail” because someone cared enough to support rescue.

Advocacy and education

Rescue isn't enough. We also work hard to prevent dogs from ending up with us in the first place. As well as sharing advice across our social platforms, our volunteers are building a hub for our website, where fosterers and owners can find educational materials for big and small challenges.

How you can help

None of this work happens without support. We're a small charity run entirely by volunteers, funded by donations and fundraising.

When you donate to Spaniel Rescue Foundation, you help us to:

  • Fund emergency vet care for dogs in crisis

  • Support foster families with supplies and medical costs

  • Protect dogs before they reach Sophie's condition

  • Give dignity to dogs whose suffering cannot be reversed

When you adopt from us, you give a rescue dog their happy ending and free up a foster space for the next dog in need. When you share our posts, educate your friends and challenge pet-shopping culture, you're preventing future suffering. And when you volunteer your time – as a foster carer, fundraiser, transport coordinator or home checker – you're making rescue possible.

We couldn't save Sophie's life, but we can honour her death by ensuring fewer dogs suffer as she did. Help us fight for dogs like Sophie. Because rescue is both the hardest and most important work we'll ever do – and we can't do it without you.
