Meet Poppy

Poppy is a beautiful, gentle and affectionate girl who adores human company and cuddles. She was found as a stray in poor condition — underweight and with obvious signs of overbreeding — yet her gentle spirit remains intact. She’s blossomed in foster care, and is such a soft, cuddly and trusting little girl. Poppy is wonderfully sociable with other dogs and people, and her fosterers say she is a joy to have around. She walks brilliantly on and off lead, and her easy-going nature will make her a lovely companion for someone seeking a loyal friend to share everyday life.

She’s happiest when close to her humans, whether curled up on the sofa or pottering alongside them outdoors. Poppy is ready to start her next chapter with a family who’ll cherish her as she deserves.

Energy & Exercise

Poppy is an active girl who enjoys being on the move, though she’s learning to relax and settle when her humans do. Although she’s crate trained, she would much prefer to snuggle on the sofa with her special person. Her walks in the woods are the highlight of her day: she stays close, doesn’t pull, and is a pleasure to take out.

She’s currently building up her muscle tone after arriving underweight and under-exercised. She’s having two off-lead walks of around 40 minutes each, though she does tire towards the end. With time and gentle encouragement, she’ll grow stronger and more confident.

Training

Poppy’s training appears to have been minimal, but she’s eager to learn and responds well to gentle guidance. She’s already mastered “sit” and is picking up new skills quickly thanks to her love of treats and praise. Her enthusiasm can bubble over at times, and she will bark with excitement, but she’s exceptionally polite and gentle.

Her barking and jumping in the air when excited will need gentle, positive training. She would love for her new family to spend time teaching her new skills.

Behaviours

Poppy has no guarding or biting issues and is generally very well-mannered. Her only quirk is barking when she’s excited — especially when heading into the garden or off on a woodland walk. She’s playful and loves carrying toys around, often inviting her fosterers to join in with her. Whether it’s a proper toy or a leaf she’s found, she’s always ready for a game.

Meeting New People

Poppy is confident and affectionate with new people. She thrives on attention and is happiest when being fussed — she’s a true cuddle monster.

Children

Although she hasn’t met children in her foster home, we believe she’d be fine with dog-savvy youngsters aged 8 and up. She deserves gentle handling and respect, especially after the challenges she’s faced, so a calm and understanding environment is key.

Dog/Cat Test

Poppy is thriving in her foster home alongside four other dogs. She doesn’t actively play with them but enjoys their company and often lies close to them for comfort. While she benefits from being part of a pack, her deepest bond is with her humans. If adopted as an only dog, she’ll need regular opportunities to socialise with other dogs to maintain her confidence and wellbeing.

Home Alone

Poppy has been left with the resident dogs for short periods and coped well. However, she may struggle if left completely alone, especially in the early days. A gradual build-up and companionship will help her adjust.

Medical History

As a stray, Poppy’s medical history is unknown. She’s not shown any signs of illness in foster care and has had a full vet check with no concerns raised. She’s still underweight but is gradually gaining condition with good nutrition and exercise.

Vet Visits

She was relaxed and friendly at the vets, soaking up the attention and behaving beautifully.

Travelling

Poppy was initially anxious in the car, barking for the first 15 minutes of our journey. Since then, she’s settled well and now travels calmly and happily.

Handling/Grooming

She’s a delight to groom — cooperative, calm, and happy to be brushed.

Food

Poppy is currently on AVA kibble for sensitive skin and stomach. She eats quickly, so has a slow feeder. Her love of food makes training easier, though she’s still learning not to steal treats from her foster siblings. She’s improving every day and is trying to learn how to wait her turn.

Sleeping

Poppy sleeps soundly in a crate in her fosterers’ bedroom. She was a little unsettled on her first night, but responded beautifully to ‘calming music for dogs’ and now quickly drifts off. During the day, she’s learned to settle outside of her crate and enjoys snoozing near her humans (although she won’t settle currently until her fosterers do).

Ideal Home

Poppy would thrive in a calm, loving home where she’s treated as part of the family. She’d suit an older couple looking for a devoted companion to share walks, cuddles, and quiet moments. She’s polite, affectionate, and eager to please — a dog who wants nothing more than to be close to her people.

She’d do well with another gentle, confident dog, though she could be an only dog if given regular opportunities to meet and interact with others. Her ideal home will offer her patience, kindness, and plenty of companionship. Poppy has so much love to give — she now needs someone to give her another chance.
